TECH INNOVATION & RESEARCH

UNIVERSITY OF ALGARVE

UAlg is a Portuguese public higher education institution located in Algarve, with teaching and research as its core activities in different scientific areas: science and technology, management and economy, earth and marine sciences, social sciences and health.

With 8069 students in 2019/20, UAlg offers 58 graduate and 114 postgraduate programs, and has 830 permanent teaching and research staff, developing a significant number of research projects, enhanced by the research produced by 90 fellowship grant holders demonstrating a clear commitment towards R&D and innovation.

UAlg internationalization is well sustained with the participation and coordination of several projects within ERASMUS+ and other European Programs. UAlg is included in three prestigious world universities ranking, Times higher education, Best Global Universities and Academic Ranking of World universities within the Oceanography, Ecology and Tourism Management subjects, where was given the highest score in five indicators of research, technology transfer and internationalization in 2020.

The scientific groundwork of UAlg along with international cooperation projects and research work aim at developing innovative ideas that contribute to the excellence of the University. Moreover, and in line with Agenda UN 2030 goals, UAlg strives to maximize the impact in society, contributing to a more sustainable future.

The trajectory for this knowledge valorization is not linear, assuming a permanent effort on the part of public and private entities, converging between the research produced and the needs of the companies. In fact, it appears that this convergence, based on solid research, corresponds to a gradual process of approximation and progressive establishment of relationships of trust.

Hence, aiming to strengthen the relations between academy and business, UALG play’s an active role in valuing and fostering knowledge transfer, supporting the creation of new knowledge based companies (start-ups & spin-offs), promoting Industrial Property Rights, and in developing and managing infrastructures directed for incubation and for a higher technological capacity in areas related with the regional Smart Specialization Strategies (RIS3).

These actions are developed under the scope of the Division of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer (CRIA) of the University of Algarve, acting on:

– Information and support on Intellectual Property Rights processes;
– Support on licensing and confidentiality agreements;
– Implementation of University-Enterprise joint ventures, towards new and innovative products and services;
– Promotion of science and knowledge based entrepreneurship;
– Support on funding opportunities for R&D and Innovation, for SME’s and new ventures;
– Fostering of International Partnerships and Networks;- Management of incubation and acceleration spaces;
